Chimney Fire Prevention: Practical Tips for Nashville Homeowners

Chimney fires are largely preventable, and most prevention comes down to a short list of consistent habits rather than anything complicated.

Burn only seasoned, dry firewood. Wood with high moisture content burns at a lower, less complete combustion temperature, which produces more creosote per fire than well-seasoned wood that's been dried for at least six months to a year.

Keep the damper open enough during a burn. Restricting airflow too much to make a fire last longer causes incomplete combustion and faster creosote buildup — a smaller, well-ventilated fire is safer than a large, choked one.

Never burn wrapping paper, cardboard, or treated/painted wood. These can create unusually large flames and dangerous flying embers that ignite creosote deposits higher in the flue.

Schedule an annual sweep and inspection, ideally before the start of the burning season. This is the single most effective prevention step, since it removes the fuel source (creosote) before it has a chance to ignite.

Install and maintain a chimney cap. Beyond keeping out animals and rain, a cap with a spark arrestor helps contain embers that could otherwise escape and ignite roofing material or nearby debris.
