How Long Does a Chimney Sweep Take?

Creosote stage is the biggest variable. Light Stage 1 soot brushes out quickly. Heavier Stage 2 buildup takes more thorough brushing. Stage 3 glaze, the hardened and potentially dangerous kind, sometimes requires specialized chemical treatment or more aggressive mechanical removal that adds real time to the job.

Roof height and pitch matter too. A steep, multi-story roofline requires more setup time for safe access than a simple single-story ranch home.

Bundling a Level 1 or Level 2 inspection with your sweep adds time, since a technician is doing a more thorough visual and camera-based review rather than just brushing and vacuuming.

Multiple flues — a wood-burning fireplace plus a separate furnace or water heater flue — naturally take longer than servicing a single flue.

If a technician finds something unexpected, like animal nesting material or significant structural damage, that discovery (and the conversation about next steps) adds time beyond the routine cleaning itself.

As a rough guide: budget under an hour for a simple, well-maintained single-flue home, and 1.5 to 2+ hours if you're bundling an inspection, dealing with heavy creosote, or have a taller, more complex roofline.
